Object 01 / The measure

One gō,
exactly.

Every pour at Kurahashi is measured in a hinoki masu cut from the brewery’s own cedar: 66 mm square inside, 45 mm deep, with a single burned line at 41.3 mm where 180 ml of sake comes to rest.

The masu

A box is the most honest cup.

    The gō is a meal

One gō is the old measure of a single person’s rice for a single meal. It is still the size of a single pour, and the reason the box is the size it is.

  2. 029 mm hinoki

    Joined without glue

Cut from the cedar stand above the kura and box-jointed dry. Cedar swells when it is wet, so the masu closes its own seams on the first pour.

  3. 0341.3 mm

    One burned line

The only mark inside the box. Pour past it and the sake runs over into the saucer: mokkiri, the host’s way of saying the measure was generous.
