Post thatcrossesthe sound.

Skerry flies parcels, prescriptions and spare parts between the eight islands of the Varrø archipelago — over water the ferry crosses twice a week, in the time it takes to boil a kettle.

Every corridor starts at one hub and ends at a door. They are fixed lanes over open water, flown at 120 metres and filed with the aviation authority — so the people underneath always know where the aircraft will be.

How a box crosses nineteen kilometres of sea.

  1. 01T+00:00

    Packed at the hub

A courier seals the box at Toftavík, weighs it and scans it into a slot. Over 2.4 kg, or anything that sloshes, goes by boat.

  2. 02T+00:03

    Weather gate

The corridor is cleared against live wind, gust and visibility readings from six mast stations. Above 32 kt the flight waits; it never guesses.

  3. 03T+00:04

    Climb to 120 m

The Tern lifts vertically, then joins its corridor: a fixed lane over water, away from houses, logged with the aviation authority.

  4. 04T+00:16

    Hover and lower

Over the drop point the aircraft holds at 25 m and winches the box down on a tether. Nobody hears more than a fridge-door hum.

  5. 05T+00:17

    Signed for, flown home

The recipient taps their code on the box lid. The aircraft climbs back into the corridor and is charging before the kettle has boiled.

“The ferry comes on Thursdays. Insulin doesn’t wait for Thursdays.”

Twenty-two Terns. Each one built to be rained on.

Our aircraft are assembled and repaired on Streymø, by people who also fish, farm and get their post this way. Every airframe is rinsed of salt after each shift and retired at 1,800 flight hours.
