The redesign, 2024 – 2026

We took the gates out and gave the windows back.

The 1904 building had been carved into offices, a server room and a turnstile lobby. The redesign undid most of it. The security gates went first; then the false ceiling in the Long Room, which had hidden the original roof lights for forty years.

Shelving now stops at 1.4 metres, so a child can reach the top and a librarian can see the whole floor. The desks moved to the windows. The staff room moved to the basement. The archive moved up from it, into a room with air you can breathe.
